Coconut oil is a centuries old remedy for dry, damaged, or frizzy hair.

5 Ways Coconut Oil Repairs Damaged Hair

Plant based shampoo

In my quest to seek healthy options for hair and skin, I read that the skin is the largest organ. Therefore, we should try to reduce or eliminate the daily toxins we expose our bodies to. For my shampoo formulas, I painstakingly researched each ingredient and hand-picked them to combat hair issues like dryness, dandruff, certain types of hair loss, etc., and to promote health and healing. I purposely included coconut oil in BellaGeneration Hair System shampoos because of its healing properties and because it penetrates more deeply and faster than other oils and conditioners.

Let us briefly go back in time to understand a little more about how shampoo came to be. It was not known as “shampoo” in 1500 B.C., but the Egyptians first combined plant and animal oils with essential oil extracts to form a soap-like material to cleanse the hair and body. Three hundred years later, a gentleman named Hans Schwarzkopf developed the first liquid shampoo in the late 1800s for the European market. Americans had to wait until 1930 when John Breck made a liquid shampoo in Springfield, MA.

Our ancestors knew about the beneficial properties of coconut oil. Today, there is a lot of medical research on the health benefits of coconut for your body, skin, and hair. Moisture retention, deep conditioning, dandruff treatment, anti-bacterial, and split-end treatment are among the many benefits of coconut oil for the hair. There are also many videos from influencers about the benefits of using coconut oil for the hair. I found this one from Angel Clark on YouTube Shorts and I really liked the way she shows how she put it in her hair.

Moisture Retention

Moisture retention is the secret to length retention and hair growth. You heard this right! When your hair is dry and brittle, it creates split ends and hair breakage that directly impacts any dreams you may be harboring about having long and luscious locks. Coconut oil moisturizes the hair, making it more elastic and less prone to tangles and breakage. Coconut oil is very stable and will not evaporate or break down. Once applied, it will stay in your hair and prevent moisture from escaping. A little goes a long way. If you accidentally use too much, wash it out and reapply less. If your scalp gets too greasy, apply the coconut oil to your ends and not your scalp. With summer on the way, the heat, chlorine from pools, and beach salt water will all rob your hair of moisture. Now you can keep your hair hydrated most healthily and naturally.

Split End Treatment

The jury is still out regarding split ends. One school of thought says that split ends are repairable. Another says the only way to address split ends and prevent further damage is to cut them off completely. I’m not sure what I believe, but I can tell you that coconut oil will conceal your split ends, making them less noticeable.

Deep Conditioning

In addition to a daily moisture routine, it is also a great idea to periodically add a deep conditioner treatment to your hair care routine. Deep hair conditioning can help prevent damage to the hair through moisture, textures, and penetration of the hair shaft. It prevents breakage and split ends. Yes, you can buy pre-made deep conditioning treatments from the store. However, I highly recommend you make some at home with Unrefined, Cold Pressed, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. All you need is about tablespoons. Make sure it is in its liquid state, so you may need to warm it up a little if the coconut oil has solidified. Apply the coconut oil to your hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap. Wrap a warm towel on top of the shower cap, and leave it on for 20-30 minutes. Then wash your hair.

Natural Hair Shine Product

Want seriously glossy strands? When used in appropriate amounts, coconut oil is a phenomenal hair shine product. You will get the added benefits of hydration and fortification. Hair shine products traditionally tame frizz and boost radiance. Coconut oil achieves the same result but without the added toxic chemicals that are not good for your hair, such as isopropyl alcohol and synthetic fragrances.

Anti-Bacterial and Anti-Fungal

Have you heard of folliculitis? It is inflammation of the hair follicles, which can manifest as itching in mild cases. But in more severe cases, this can result in pus-filled blisters that break open and crust. The cause of folliculitis is bacterial or fungal infections. And guess what? Coconut oil is both a natural anti-fungal and anti-bacterial.

Dandruff is another one of those pesky hair-related issues that are common. Did you know one cause of dandruff is an overgrowth of yeast or fungus on the scalp? In addition to anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, coconut oil and the fatty acids it contains, in combination with Vitamins E and K, soothe inflammation while de-flaking your scalp.
